Family
Perhaps it is because both my parents have passed...perhaps it is because I really appreciated my family and friends this holiday season...perhaps it is because I continue to watch the news and the events that continue to demonstrate the world's disrespect for humanity...whatever the impetus is I just needed to write about family.
To me, family isn't a word to be defined or even a concept to be explained. It doesn't mean a specific configuration or particular expectations. To me, "family" is a connectedness - a feeling - that demonstrates itself through select moments.
Family is the feeling that comes over me when I look into my child's eyes and remember that she came from inside me--that once she and I were one, and now she is a very independent person who has made me so very proud.
Family is the feeling I have when I am in a church and a family member or friend takes my hand during The Lord's Prayer.
Family is the feeling of anticipation as I drive to work and the cell phone rings with my sister's daily phone call.
Family is the feeling I get when someone dear to me is having surgery and I find myself in the waiting room surrounded by people who care about and love me and the person I am supporting.
Family is the feeling that grabs me when my only niece calls me to give me her latest passionate political update.
Family is the feeling that embraces me when a family member calls to tell me something exciting, frustrating, frightening, or to just say hello.
Family is the feeling that comes over me while I am in the kitchen cooking with my daughter or my best friend, and we share the day's events while we cook.
Family is the feeling that washes over me while watching someone I love receive a diploma, or exchange vows with his/her soulmate, or give birth to new life.
Family is the teary feeling I get when the Efantis side of the family is gathered on Christmas Eve and my cousin reads aloud the biblical passage about the birth of Jesus.
Family is the feeling I get when I am in the car driving to an outing with family and/or friends and someone's words trigger a memory and we all burst into song or story.
Family is the spiritual honor of baptizing my Godchild, putting the holy oil on her, and witnessing her growth into a beautiful woman.
Family is the joyous feeling of our Seletos side of family gathering on Christmas Day and singing our version of the Twelve Days of Christmas.
Family is the feeling I get when I am in the midst of a beautiful natural setting, surrounded by family and friends participating in a spiritual ceremony that changes my life forever.
Family is the music of life that comes in many forms be it through the high notes of the tin whistle, or deep sound of drums, the mellow notes of a piano, or strumming of guitar strings.
Family....feel it?
