The Audience -National Theater Live

Tonight was a phenomenal televised theater experience. National Theater Live broadcasted the London production of The Audience at Northwestern University in Evanston. This play brought the meetings of the Queen Elizabeth II played by the amazing Helen Mirren with many of her prime ministers. As the various Prime Ministers meet with the Queen, we the audience learn a little bit more about the history during their times, often a great deal about their personalities, and mostly about the intelligent, strategic, sensitive Queen. Most fascinating to me was the use of the Queen's inner child, who shed light on what it was like for the Queen from the time she first learned she would some day be Queen to the many challenges she faced as the years passed. This use of inner child always has great impact on me.
In addition, there was the brief intermission insert in which the set designer and costume designer discuss how they studied all the portraits of the Queen and matched color swatches for her outfits and also for furniture used on the set. At the end of the production, Director Stephen Daldry and Helen Mirren discuss the play. Listening to the effort and study that Helen Mirren puts into a performance explains why she is recognized as one of the best.
Thoroughly enjoyable evening and all for $20.00!
