New Learning-A Shaman and Her Ancestors
Monday, December 28, 2015
On this day, Aunt Martha, Cosy, Kathy & Dan Creely ventured to Mt. Prospect to the home of a Mongolian family who were hosting a Shaman from Mongolia. I know, this is yet another unusual event for me to be attending, but I believe that all events offer new knowledge, maybe new beliefs or validation of beliefs, maybe some thought provoking ideas....so, I go willingly.
We entered the home offering them food that we had brought with us. They invited us inside and we all sat together. The Shaman took out a stone bottle that had an essence in it. We were to put it on our finger and touch our head, lips, etc. Then we were to hand the container back to her, and she'd pass it to the next person, but it always returned to her first. She then began to speak and we had to wait for the interpreter to translate. She explained that she began to receive messages from her ancestors telling her that she had to explain more clearly the history of her people. She showed us pictures of her in various modes in which orbs floated above her head--she believes them to be her ancestors. This was an interesting exchange, because she was sharing with us but there was also some hesitation--the trust wasn't there yet. (In the mean time the host brought out bowls of dumpling soup for everyone--always food as the common denominator.) She then brought out many books that she has written in Mongolian to explain the history that needed clarification for future generations and peoples of the world to know about them. Her husband, who is a doctor, said she worked twenty hours a day writing these for over a year.
Dan then asked her if it would be alright for him to do a little ceremony for them. They agreed although, they seemed a bit hesitant. They offered him a place to set up. For those of us who know Dan, you can imagine it was quite organized, symbolic, spiritual, etc. As the ceremony, progressed, the Shaman, her family, and host family grew more interested and excited. Dan gave them cedar oil to put on their heart spots--very similar to her introduction to us. We all participated in the Ossinagon or welcoming of the spirits by facing the four directions, sky, and earth and blessing each other in mind-clear thinking, heart-strength, hands-good work, feet--keep the balance. The Shaman and all others were active participants and really enjoyed this...they often held their hands out and up and moved them in circular motion saying something like 'hooray"-an applause or voice of satisfaction and acceptance.

Of course, Aunt Martha drew attention--who knows why but one of the other individuals decided to play a type of juice harp directly to her.

Upon leaving, the Shaman presented Dan with a stone from Mongolia and some ashes, I missed hearing he significance of the ashes, but what is important is that they now trusted Dan.
The Shaman will not continue her work, as the ancestors have told her to come to Chicago and begin the journey of blessing the waters of Lake Michigan. It will be interesting to see if they contact Dan upon their return.
