Brooklyn and Its Impact

Tuesday, January 26, 2016

Today, Kathy and I went to see Brooklyn, the movie about the Irish immigrant girl who comes to America through the help of her sister and a priest in America. The beginning of the movie impacted me as I watched this young girl stand on the deck of the ship and wave goodbye to her mother and sister, presumably for the last time. I thought of my grandparents coming here and John's dad, who all left parents, siblings, and more family in Greece to come to America for a better life. To be so courageous, so adventurous to leave everything they knew to come to a place they knew nothing about is amazing to me.  For many of these immigrants, they weren't even sure that there would be someone waiting for them, and most knew they did not have someone waiting. Not to mention what it was like for the family left behind in their homelands, and how they felt saying good-bye to their loved one, knowing it could be the last time they see their child or sibling. I just can't wrap my brain around the totality of courage and belief, so I have a new-found respect for all those who came before me and all those who will come after me. I am here because of these brave souls. For this I am blessed.

  1. I share your feelings about this. I feel this way when I read about the early settlers leaving the East and heading out into the wilderness to face the hardships alone. Amazing.
