The Blessed Waters

On January 6th we celebrate the Epiphany or Three Kings' Day. To quote one source..."Epiphany is a combined Greek word which is derived from epi: to and phainein: to show, to show forth, to shine upon; the noun is epiphaneia, meaning appearance, manifestation. This Feast included the Birth of Jesus Christ (that is, the Incarnation of the Logos), His Baptism (that is, His dedication in a human manner), and the appearance of the Father and the Holy Spirit-the first and only united appearance of the true Christian God."

After our Epiphany service, we receive the sanctified water and take it home, drink it, and sprinkle it around our homes. The following prayer is said as we do this...

"O Master, we beseech Thee, sprinkle upon us Thine unworthy servants purifying water which is the gift of Thy compassion..."

Well, last year our priest encouraged us to take some of this Holy Water to a nearby river, stream, etc. in hopes of spreading peace and love. He said....

"God showers forth rain upon the face of the earth. The water then gathers into streams, flows from small streams into larger rivers, and from larger rivers into lakes, seas, and oceans. From there it is reabsorbed into the atmosphere through evaporation, where it will condense into clouds and once again return to the earth as rain. In this way the entire water supply of our planet is connected."

So last year Dan Creely and I went to the Des Plaines River and sprinkled some of the Holy Waters into it. It was an honor to have Dan accompany me and share the blessed waters. This year I won't be able to do this on the day because I will be in FL, but upon returning I hope to be able to bless the river once again.
